Altotenor-kontralto sesiyle Vincenzo Capezzuto Vivaldi`den Bach`a, cazdan popa söyleyebilen inanılmaz bir sanatçı

Leyla Diana: ve Schubert’in Lied’i Attis (Atys) hakkında çektiğiniz klip gerçekten harika. Fikir ve yansımaları harikulade. Konusu mitolojiden. Schubert’in yorumuyla sizin fikirleriniz.

Vincenzo Capezzuto: Attis (Atys) klibine dair; Evet konu mitolojiden alınmış Attis’e aitir.

Leyla Diana: We would like know Vincenzo Capezzuto a little closer. We know you both as a dancer and as a singer. When you came to Turkey two years ago, the audience at CRR Concert Hall had listened / watched a magnificent concert. many spectators found the chance to meet with your sympathetic stance on the stage and with your ability to hear the souls of their hearts. Some of the audience had already been familiar with you , some of them had just been getting to know you. I would request you to tell us about your music and art life. First of all, How did you meet with music? How did you start?

Vincenzo Capezzuto: I actually met the music and dance when I was 3 years old, this is what my parents always told me, and since that time I never stopped singing and dancing. There was an influence, for sure, from my father’s family because they were/are all musicians and even my grandfather was a conductor and he used to play the flugelhorn. Then I started my carreer primarely as dancer at the San Carlo Opera House where I gradueted and started my professional carreer as solist dancer worldwide but in the meantime I secretley cultivated my passion of singing.

Leyla Diana: What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a countertenor voice, in your opinion?

Vincenzo Capezzuto: There’s actually a dispute about my voice; it immediately reminds the countertenor voiceprint but it is not like that at all. My voice is a natural voice with a range that covers the tenor voice and a part of contralto voice. The colour is androgynous, if you close your eyes you might think there is a woman singing. Also my technique has nothing to do with the countetenor one which is a specific technique that uses the falsetto. That said, my type of voice allowes me to perform different kind of musical repertoires from the XVI cent. going through Vivaldi and Bach getting to the Jazz or the pop music. I surprisengly feel my voice as clay that molds itself, that changes and evolves. The only problem I have is that each time I make a phone call it is so hard to explain that it’s me speaking... Hahahaha.

Leyla Diana: How did you start dancing?

Vincenzo Capezzuto: I was that kind of kid that used to dance and sing all the time, so my father in order to make me feel happy and calm took me to an audition in a very important school of Naples ( San Carlo Opera house) where I trained until I gradueted. I was sourronded by great musicians, dancers, singers, performers and I caught many elements that helped me during my carrer.

Leyla Diana: You are working on different projects, one of which is singing with L`Arpeggiata, directed by Christina Pluhar. Using the Baroque period early music, the group brings jazz, Latin and some other genres in a very beautiful format which influences audiences with dances. Could you talk about your opion about this group?

Vincenzo Capezzuto: First of all it is a great pleasure and honor to work with L’Arpeggiata since almost 9 years already and it is always a huge emotion to share the stage and exchange emotions with such an incredible ensemble. Christina discovered me as singer and she asked me to sing in almost all the music projects on her roster. The elements of crossing music genres, styles, voices, instruments, colours, going from the music of Henry Purcell to the South american music are just a great thing for me bacause curiosity is a big part of my personality.

Leyla Diana: Also, can you please talk about Soqquadro Italiano that you formed in 2011. Is your aim to preserve the culture by also using 16th and 17th century Italian music? And enriching it by collaging different disciplines together? Could you please explain further on this music ensemble`s mission? How would you explain the meaning of Soqquadro to our readers?

Vincenzo Capezzuto: Soqquadro is the only italian word in use with the double consonant Q and it means turmoil, to turn things up side-down but for us it means to look at things in a different way using all the elements that are part of our background that can be at the service of an idea. For instance I founded this artistic group with another eclectic artist Claudio Borgianni, he started his artistic carreer as musician then he studied and performed as actor, play director and then he came back to the music. So we are really interested in mixing art forms being open to whatever could be effective for our projects without limits and prejudice.

Leyla Diana: Being open to the discovery in art and bringing old and new together reveal intriguing syntheses. How do you evaluate your synthesis when different outcomes arise despite same thoughts?

Vincenzo Capezzuto: For me art is all about experimenting and pushing boundaries. For instance I look at the music with a different eye, not in the conventional way of thinking but always trying to find different things to say. When you work in this direction of experimentation, the goal is not the result but the experimentation in itself.

Leyla Diana: How do orchestras, which perform traditional classical music evaluate your works? Is there anyone who thought and reacted that you are reshaping the original?

Vincenzo Capezzuto: I honestly don’t know, when I performed with Soqquadro Italiano in Istanbul last year with the program “La Stravaganza” dedicated to Vivaldi, we asked to a classical conventional orchestra to take part of this project. It was so interesting for me to see how they approched this Vivaldi repertoire complitely reworked by Claudio Borgianni and other members of the group. In the beginning seemed hard but then they were complitely within the project so they went for it and they appreciated a new way of making music from a different point of view.

Leyla Diana: You had launched three albums, would you briefly describe the latest one, Schubert? Why Schubert? As a matter of fact, a very interesting work from Monteverdi to Mina. How did this come out?

Vincenzo Capezzuto: Because we are artists and we really feel free to express ourselves and our ideas without impositions that comes from the system, we realized three CDs and they are part of a serial discography: NUMERO ZERO which is a vinyl with CD, NUMERO UNO-LIVE which contains “Da Monteverdi a Mina-live” and finally NUMERO DUE- SCHUBERT. The idea of Schubert came from Claudio Borgianni bacause he was so inspired by his music and he really wanted to experiment and rework it. I was a bit skared in the beginning because of the german lenguage and because it always seemed to me so far away from my style. Then I started to go deeper and deeper and I fell in love with his music. I really think that this Album in particular is one of the most interesting things Soqquadro ever done. It’s fresh, poetic, groovy and so touching. When young people discover a composer such as Schubert or Monteverdi through the way we perform it and they appreciate them there’s no price for that and we have achieved our goal.

Leyla Diana: As an Italian, how do you feel when you hear Vivaldi ? What does Vivaldi mean for you and how do you define your Vivaldi?

Vincenzo Capezzuto: The Vivaldi music represents the unmistakable characteristics of the italian music; the beautiful melody, all the possible instrumental colours, the description of the nature and the actions, he was a master to draw with the music and I really can feel the emotions so vividly through his music. The Soqquadro’s version of Vivaldi is a fresh Vivaldi, a different Vivaldi but it is still Vivaldi in his essence.

Leyla Diana: Do you have any upcoming new projects and do you plan a tour to Turkey within these projects?

Vincenzo Capezzuto: My next Project with Soqquadro Italiano will be dedicated to Bach and we’ll have our premiere in Italy in September. I am so thrilled about it even because it will be involved again the electronic music, which I love and that we strarted to use in the previous Schubert project. We have a great team of artists for this premiere included Cristina Spelti for the lights and the set-up, Fabio Fiandrini and Claudio Borgianni for the electronics live music, Corrado Cristina for the sound, Cosmo Nocenzi to the keybord, Luciano Orologi to the sax and clarinets, Marco Forti to the doublebass and Gabriele Miracle to the percussions. At the moment there’s no invitation to bring our new projects to Turkey, but I am sure there will be soon a chance for us to come back to this amazing country where just one year ago we had and incredible concert with La Stravaganza.

Leyla Diana: And about Schubert’s lied Atys. This klip is wonderful. The idea and reflections are so nice. The theme come from motology. Schubert interpetation and her idea with your imagination. Can you plese talk about this klip a little. What would you reflection? I want to know your creative idea.

Vincenzo Capezzuto: Concerning Atys video: Yes the theme is about the mythology figure as Atys and the writer Johann Mayrhofer (3/11/1787-5/12/1836), tells about the moment when he is far away from his loved Goddess Cybele who rejected him and after he remembered all the feelings he used to feel when he was with her he decides to suicide jumping from a canyon and die. As many mythological figures Atys embodies this duality of good and bad, The mirror, therefore, embodies a negative or positive value according to the cases: in it we lose and recognize ourselves, we discover what is fleeting (beauty) and what is eternal (being), we distinguish the dissimilar from the similar, so we decided that was a great idea to use it for the video. The directors of the video: Fabio Fiandrini, Cristina Spelti and Claudio Borgianni were also inspired by the stylistic elements that Schubert often uses for his music which are the repetitions. That’s why the mirror was the element that could describe Atys in the best way.

Leyla Diana: As a final question, I would like to ask about jazz. How close are you to jazz? Can you evaluate songs and dances from jazz angle?

Vincenzo Capezzuto: I feel absolutely very close to the Jazz music, I am surrounded by great jazz musicians all the time, I am so acctracted by it and often I sing many standards. I am sure that soon I will develop a new project dedicated to the Jazz and who knows maybe both dancing and singing. For instance this BACH Project has so much of Jazz in it already..let’s see what happens!

Leyla Diana: Thank you in advance for your patience and sincerity to answer our questions in this interview for our Cazkolik the jazz news portal readers.
